7 Days Shira

The 7 days Shira route hike covers just 56 kilometers, or about 35 miles, from start to finish. That makes it one of the shortest ways to climb Kilimanjaro—only the Umbwe route is a bit shorter among the seven main paths up the mountain. You can tackle it in either six or seven days, but going with the seven-day plan is smarter because it adds an extra day for the final push to the top, giving your body more time to adjust to the altitude.

What makes the 7 days Shira Route unique?

Well, the only pro of using the Shira Route is that you avoud the day 1 and 2 steep climb to reach the fairly flat Shira Plateau.

This seven day hike along Shira route kicks off at the Murram/Morum Barrier gate, which sits at 3,414 meters high on the Shira Ridge along the mountain’s western side. Right away, you’re walking across the beautiful open Shira Plateau, where you get these amazing wide-open views of the plains, forests, and distant peaks all around. On the third day, you’ll hike past the huge rocky Lava Tower, a standout landmark that looks like a natural fortress sticking up from the ground. From there, the trail switches over to what’s called the Southern Circuit—a winding path that loops around the base of Kibo Peak’s southern ice fields. Along the way, there’s a tough climb up the steep Barranco Wall, which feels like scrambling up a sheer cliff but rewards you with killer views once you’re at the top.

Eventually, you arrive at Barafu Camp, one of the two main base camps in Kilimanjaro’s high, barren alpine desert area. It’s positioned east of the summit, Uhuru Peak, which towers at 5,895 meters. After resting up, you make your big summit attempt from there, aiming to reach Uhuru Peak in the early morning hours. Once you’ve hopefully stood on the roof of Africa, the descent takes you down the mountain’s southeastern side, ending at the Mweka Gate down at 1,640 meters. The cool part is, you don’t have to backtrack over the same ground—you just keep moving forward the whole way.

7 Days Itinerary & Map

Not a lot of people pick the Shira route, so the first couple of days feel peaceful and uncrowded, with plenty of space to enjoy the scenery on your own. But things change by the end of day two, when it joins up with the super-popular Lemosho route. After that point, you’re sharing the trail with bigger groups, and it gets pretty busy, just like many other paths on the mountain. In a way, Shira is the older version of Lemosho—they’re like cousins, with Lemosho being the newer, more refined one in our book. The main reason? Shira jumps straight into high altitude at Morum Barrier, which is already over 3,000 meters and can hit some climbers hard with altitude sickness right from the start. Lemosho, by contrast, begins nearly a full kilometer lower down the mountain. That extra drop gives hikers more days at gradually increasing heights, so your body has a better shot at getting used to the thinner air without as much risk. One more thing to keep in mind: unlike the Marangu route, which has cozy huts for sleeping, Shira is all about camping. You’ll be pitching tents every night, so pack accordingly and get ready for that outdoor adventure vibe. Here’s a breakdown of the seven-day itinerary we always suggest over the quicker six-day option—it spreads out the effort and boosts your odds of success:
